How to Multiply Your Annuals for FREE

In partnership with

Happy Saturday from Minnesota,

We just got 3.27” of soaking rain and the garden has turned into a lovely shade of spring green.

it’s shaping up to be a picturesque memorial weekend with sunny skies and highs in the low 70’s…

Today’s newsletter features TWO videos, though the first is all about the AUDIO…

Garden Wildlife Report

One of the most INTERESTING developments in our garden, is with our resident leopard frog, which I believe is a male.

A few nights ago…someone CROAKED! But no worries, it was only our frog inside the water feature…and he was REALLY loud. We’ve had frogs for 3 seasons now and I’ve never heard them vocalize before.

The next night he started in again, and then something amazing…someone else joined the croaking choir:

(You can’t actually see them in the video, but make sure you have the audio on!)

The next day I realized she lured him away with her siren song. Did she lay eggs in the water feature or did they go somewhere else to complete their ‘tadpole transaction’? I’m not sure, but we should have a much quieter answer in the coming days 🐟 🐟 🐟

Friday Update: our male returned yesterday from his (river?) trip. He should be content for the summer with the two new water lilies we just added to our mini pond.

Garden Plant Report

Planting is finished with the exception of a few fill-in zinnias I saved to illustrate this week’s gardening tip…

If you buy 4 to 6 pack annuals like zinnias, Mexican sunflowers, or tropical milkweed they often have multiple stems coming out of each cell. So how can you make 3 multi-stemmed seedlings into eight like this:

Many gardeners plant multi-stemmed seedlings “as is” or pinch/cut off the the extra stems, but there’s a better way to do this that benefits both you and the pollinators…

Could you afford $3,500 to remove a chew toy?

From $3,500 to remove a chew toy, to $7,000 for a hip replacement, keeping your pets healthy is getting more and more expensive. Fortunately, pet insurance can help offset these rising costs. Pet insurance can cover eligible accidents and illnesses with up to 90% reimbursement. Get your buddy covered today with plans starting at just $10 a month.

🌱🌱 MULTIPLY your seedlings❓ 🤔

When you buy 4 or 6 packs of annuals like Mexican sunflowers or tropical milkweed, there are typically several seeds in each individual cell of the container so you’ll see several stems coming out of each cell. The root systems will be a tangled mess, but that doesn’t mean they can’t be separated…

For optimal growth and more plants, we divide these seedlings and sometimes get 4 plants from ONE cell. 🤯 This is how we do it:

If you’re interested in dividing seedlings from annual packs for your garden, check the resources section below for more info on the plants we do this with…

Garden Resources

In case you want to search locally for 4 and 6 pack annuals, here are the plants we most often do this with and that were shown in the video:

Tithonia Rotundifolia ‘Torch’ (Mexican Sunflower) ⬅️ (DO NOT BUY Tithonia Diversifolia, it’s not the same species and also not a monarch magnet)

Asclepias Curassavica (Tropical Milkweed) ⬅️ (comes in regular, silky red, silky yellow)

Zinnias (we planted zowie zinnia and state fair mix this season)

Happy Dividing!
